The 603 series of engines can probably take a maximum two tooth cam sprocket jump. As they have hydraulic lifters. The 616 and 617 engines with the equivalent of solid lifters. Cannot without damage. I have no certainty this is the issue. Just perhaps one possibility from your posts descriptions. I would want to eliminate it by checking. If it were my car.


Usually the chains just break on all those engines. With the rare exception.
