Fuel loss is minimal. I also back the car up on ramps - not all the way, but enough to give some room down underneath and remove the ground strap from the battery before starting(safety issue).

I always thought that clamping a hose was damaging to it. It takes quite a bit of pressure to really shutdown flow, so I just stick a round pencil in the end to stop the flow. In this case, it works fine.
