The new noise level since the event both remains concerning. Plus almost has to be associated with the issue. . I hate to suggest things that are work. You do not have a broken valve spring do you?
How about setting the engine to the specified degrees for insertion of the injection pump. Then have a look to make sure the tang is in the center of the window. Of the injection pump. Subject to rapid loading could be the timing device for the injection pump. Again something that seldom fails. The noise is related to the problem whatever it is . A stripped injection pump drive would be unusual. As would the cam timing being off yet it was.
At least in my opinion that is not worth much. A minor crack in the head would produce no new noise. A major crack would probably be blowing coolant out of the system or producing major bubbles at least. Can you tell if the new smoke out the back at idle. Is fuel or oil? A turbo in pretty bad condition also might also create this situation.. Not too hard to check.
When I pick a variety of potential issues that might be creating a problem. Human nature is to check the easiest things to check first.
