I've used steel grinding discs on aluminum in a pinch and never exploded one (not that it couldn't happen) but I for sure would NOT recommend it. It's like trying to cut masonry with a steel cutting disc - you can make a dent in it but it's really frustrating and once you get the right disc you wonder why you even tried with the wrong one. One of those events for which the face palm was invented.....
