The 300CE coupes from 1990-1992 were the only W124 chassis to get the early M104 engine with 210 hp. It had 3.0 liters and 24 valves (DOHC).
The 1993 300E was the first year of the 217 hp 3.2 liter M104 engine. The badge was incorrect in the U.S. models. 1993 300E's with the 2.8 liter engine were badged 300E 2.8, but 1993 300E's with the 3.2 liter engine were simply labeled "300E".
Except for the U.S. market, Mercedes badged in the rest of the world the 1993 300E (3.2) and the 1994-1995 E320's as 320E's.
This 3.2 liter engine was first used in the 1993 300E (3.2), continued in this chassis in the 1994-1995 E320, and was used in the next E-class chassis in 1996-1997 E320. It was also used in the W140 S320 from 1992-1999.
