Lucky guy!!!
I'm a sous chef at a very high end restaurant in the Napa Valley. I love these mushrooms. We generally pay about $13 a pound. However, at some of the local grocery stores I've seen them charge $39 for a half pound! Out here, we get to pick chanterelles, black trumpets and huge porcini mushrooms at the Sonoma coast during the fall. In California, morels are found in the Sierras, but from what I've heard you really have to know where to look. These mushrooms may sound expensive but in 2000 and 2001 we were paying up to $2600 a pound for Italian white truffles!!! After the supplement charge on the menu ($75) we barely broke even.
