Used to be that a typical office had clerks/secretaries and high level workers doing the brain work of whatever was done.
The clerks are gone. The boss has an administrative aid to do what the private secretaries did, which is now mostly screening for the boss, distributing his/her stuff, and carrying out various tasks. The higher level workers handle their own correspondence now.
Having been in the middle of it while it was transitioning, I was very happy to not hand my work over to the typists, and word process my writing until I got it exactly the way I wanted it.
