The problem with production systems being remotely accessible is that the systems are susceptible to unauthorized outside access. Production system controls and data acquisition need to be isolated. No access to the outside world. A typical production system hacked or otherwise disturbed can cause lost production costs that can be cripplingly expensive. I never created an application with even company internal access beyond data being logged to relational database within the companies control and no network connections beyond.
