It sounds like post #3 is your problem. If clips that hold hard lines are absent they move around causing weakness. Then you may have bumped or bent it further during the return line work. A common area for that failure is where the the top of the nut touches the hard line. Maybe a photo with engine off with the area circled could be helpful also.
