Stalin purged the majority of the Russian army officers in 1937-38? So the poorly led Russian troops took unreasonable losses in the early part of the invasion. Perhaps it was the same in Finland.

How the Russians restored a good working command structure as fast as they did is probably a story in itself.
Some of it was as pictured in 'Enemy at the Gates'. A suicide attacks. Some of the Finns had to be taken off the front lines, as the mowed down waves of Russians. The dogma of the Russian command killed plenty.
The Russians did do their part against Germany. No doubt about that. A lot of nations are left out of their contributions to the ending of that War. Poles, Australians, New Zealand and others. Some such as Vietnam fought on the Allies side. A complex war, that a myopic view does injustice to. Even my own. My view can change with any new info.
