On careful inspection, the ceramic at the spark plug end of the wire was cracked. So that's where it was shorting out to the heat shield. I removed the heatshield, and wrapped it all up in electrical tape. It seems to work fine now. I'll keep an eye out for a replacement, but at least it's not missing anymore. Thanks!
