Engine cleaning problems?

On Tuesday I took the car down to the local do it yourself car wash for an engine cleaning. Parked, and waited for 1/2 hour (in Dunkin Donuts) for the engine to cool down.

Cleaned the engine and engine area and now it looks like new. However on Wednesday when accelerating on to the Garden State Parkway the car surged(?) at about 2800RPM and continued as long as I pushed the accelerator. When I let up to cruise the surging went away.

I figured that I must have wet something that I should not have, but kept on driving to my appointment (60 miles) because it smoothed out on criuse and it was not missing or sputtering, just surging on hard acceleration.

Well it seemed to get better as the drive progressed, I reached my destination and parked. When I started up again the same problem arose but again it smoothed out during the ride back to the office and was OK after that. I drove the car 5 separate times last night and it seemed OK, as did it this morning.

What did I do at the car wash? Should I have covered some parts up before cleaning? I searched the forum and it seemed that all everyone else does is to spray everything. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe
