I don't know too much about computers, but I buy mine from a custom shop. They take your order and they usually have the machine ready in a couple weeks. Its cheaper because you only pay for what you need, and they'll usually be able to service and upgrade it for you later. I'm not too sure if you can get a laptop at a place like that, but it's worth a shot. I've heard some iffy things about Dell, but I've never used one or see one used. Also, I'm more of a desktop guy, but some laptops are pretty good. You might want to check out a powerbook from Mac. My friend swears by Macs, and I find that they aren't so bad either.
