Unhappy transmission slipping and popping

well, i know there is quite a bit about transmission slippage, but i wanted to put my details on here, just in case someone knew what i should check first. here's the deal. 1987 300 D turbo. owned for a year now. drives great. engine strong. 190,000 + miles. believe i have a 124 chassis. few problems here and there. (electrical mostly) but within the last week, a new development.
driving along and the tranny starts slipping. well...it's a hesitation and then when it goes into the next gear, it is like "bam". happens in all gears until i start cruising. happens on downshifts as well. sometimes worse than others. i know i need to have it checked out, but i have been trying combinations of accerlation to see if i can ease the stress on the tranny until i can get it in the shop. may help a bit to ease off on pedal when shift is about to occur, but also has been good sometimes to rev it at this point.
first thing i checked was the fluid of course. might have been a shade low so i added about a pint or less. didnt make it worse or better. but i may have added too much now, so i will have to drain off a bit.
any ideas? i am poor man...so i need to have a good idea before i start checking things out.
also does anyone know where i can find fluid capacities for my model and year? (specifically ATF and oil, but other capcities would be cool to know as well. )
