I would imagine with the 3 liter and a 5 speed manual you have the best combination of performance vs fuel economy you could get in the 123. Only possible better one would be a 5 speed 240D but you'd lose some of the long legs on the highway with the smaller motor, even with the 5 speed.
Good luck with the bushings. Where are you in England? I hope the rust worm hasn't had too good of a feed on the car.
