I kinda thought I was over the whole old Benz thing but I'm having a good time with this one. It's a pretty solid base to start from. The 250/8 came with a blown engine and never quite ran right, I think due to cam timing. The '76 280C was really a basket case but I didn't recognize it as quickly as I could have. It ran well but the sills were made of milk cartons and Bondo. The '71 250C was a blast, it ran well and everything worked but the respray had disintegrated to the point that you didn't dare brush up against the car for fear of requiring stiches. The 450SEL came from a forum member in Dallas. We flew down with our 1 year old and drove it home sight unseen. It was OK, ran great and was mechanically sound but it almost every window leaked, the trunk was usually full of water and so on. I fell into a smoking deal on a '97 Crown Vic with 57,000 miles for $3000 so passed the MB on to a brother in-law who drove it until a stroke sidelined him.
So far, the 300SD has needed a lot of little things, rekeyed the drivers door to fit the factory key, fixed the central locking, fixed the wipers and replaced the thermostat. A 2 can diesel purge and glow plugs did wonders for start up and idle. Depo headlights took care of the rotten plastic and the one headlight full of water. It needs tires and the windows fixed and a smattering of little stuff. Some rust at the top of the passenger door needs looking at. I think the car could have sat since 2013, that was the date code on the wipers and they looked trashed plus the usual spiderwebs and debris in the crevices.
The boy does love driving it, he says he hates driving my '01 Maxima, "it's too easy". I'm threatening him with a drive in the '74 F250 SuperCab. That should be fun...
Thanks for the info on the wheels, I did a lot of scrolling but never found a pic that I felt matched what's on the car exactly. Now I need to get a center cap to replace the one that went missing yesterday.
