To the OP, I could imagine that hordes of lizards on the roadway might introduce poor traction issues, greasing the skids perhaps.

I had perhaps a similar experience with rabbits in western, central Utah back when, '92. I and some friends were on our way to CO, on the road at maybe 1 AM and there must have been some sort of annual mating jamboree going on as the countryside was thick with them. Perhaps they congregated by the roadway, attracted by the occasional bright lights (traffic was light). I lost track of how many of them made a beeline for the underside of my tires.

I felt a little bad about the slaughter but given the sheer numbers I could see, I didn't worry much about the viability of the local population.
