Not meaning to knock the 170DS, But that motor reported put out 43 hp and 74 foot pounds of torque, from a displacement of under 1.8 L. I saw a video of the 170DS and it looks pretty neat. The grill and headlights especially. But I suspect it was no speed racer.

I own a 170S in which the ;lawn mower engine used on the gas models were pretty much all worn out as the main civilian car in Germany from 1938-49.

I found several OM636 engines and discovered that they are the same as the early reefer engines used on Thermo-King units from 1973-2002.

The main difference between the two 170-180 set-ups is that the clutch on the diesel version is much thicker.

These engines reliably power the cars to 60mph and are remarkably economical.

Parts are still everywhere.

I have all the manuals for these and daw_two had the earliest diesel version made with 2x two-cylinder heads.

The biggest issue I have been told is the rear axle gears are typically neglected by owners and the from springs are terrible. Also-- no power brake booster.

I looked at installing a 123 brake system but it's too much work.
