Thanks for posting this narrative!! I have a 06 E350 with a possible bad shifter. All I read talked about programming that would be needed from the dealer if I bought used. Have been absorbed with other projects and have not addressed the problem - my sincere thanks for the excellent info. It looks like there's a strong possibility I could do exactly as you did.
