I don't remember when these came to the US but they were sold though US VW dealers. I have seen at least one US delivery car with the twin Solex carbs although I think most of them sold here had a D-Jet system.

A lot of engine parts and fuel injection are the same as found on the Porsche 914. I think the fuel sending unit might be the same VDO as you showed in the photos.
