ALL washable filters have lower media surface area and larger pores. Thats how they have higher airflow than standard paper filters.
Is simple physics; you can't increase flow while having less surface area without reducing restriction, hence larger pores and larger matter can pass through.

It is common to wash the Air Filters on big rigs and other types of engine powered equipment.

No, its not, especially in modern engines. Donaldson Powercore filters are becoming the most common filter media. They have higher airflow and filter better than conventional paper media AND occupy smaller volume of space. How? Drastically increasing filtering surface area by being formed in a honeycomb channels rather than a flat surface.
