THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES !!!

I figured that it was the pump but wasn't sure. I went to a local recycler and he would have sold me one from a 1981 SD for $25.00 but Mercedes said that it wasn't compatable. The yard had a couple of 280CE's a couple of 300D's (earlier models) and a couple of S class cars. I'll have to keep Looking.

I assume that this system is separate from the engine vacuum system and that a leak here won't affect the transmission shifting etc.?
