NO MORE GAPING HOLE!
I finally got around to fixing the drain after assuring myself that the welds elsewhere were as clean and watertight as I could get them.
Sorry, not intermediate photos, only those after welding, grinding and painting.
The whole area including inside the hinge pocket gets several nice coats and we can move on to putting things back together.
Almost fully welded.
