Probably just needs the solenoid plunger cleaned up, adjust the VCV to soften the shifting, then go through it.
The mechanic he consulted likely had no knowledge of the lost art of a w123.

Good thing you saved it, a lot of people these days would pawn it for scrap.
Yeah it should be a good road machine. I’m digging the manual simplicity of everything 😎 Haven’t had a daily driver w123 wagon since I sold my 85 a few years ago Selling the 85 has been a huge regret.

The starter issue seemed to be related to a rigged up manual glow plug relay that was installed. I detailed my findings in another post. Going to need a few interior bits and some elbow grease on the paint I pressure washed the engine bay this morning and it’s looking much better already. Getting it registered next week and will take it for a good drive and get a list of to do’s together. Starts and stops just fine. Only had it up to about 20 at my storage building parking lot.

I picked it up from the mechanics shop. They know w123’s but to get it to where he wanted it to be would have been a fortune at shop rates.
