I had an unusual encounter with carpenter ants a few years ago. I was at my mothers place in Oregon at the time, we were sorting through some family items, and we opened a shoebox that had a bunch in the bottom under some paper that they had apparently been chewing on.

I’ve rarely encountered carpenter ants in my day, my mother was pretty sure that’s what they were, I a web search, sure seemed like that’s what they were.

It was hot day, I took the box out on the driveway to see if anything in it was worth saving. I dumped the contents out and quickly realized I had delivered a death sentence on the ants. They died in the hot sun really quickly. Hadn’t been my intention, I didn’t really expect it. Oh well.
