Wouldn't that indicate a large amount of oil coming out of the CCV? Or does a bad seal mean that oil can somehow leak upwards out of the inlet at the sump?

When I had a bad turbo drain grommet it indeed leaked a lot. It must be very close to the oil level and when the Engine is going Oil is getting thrown around as it comes off of the crank shaft.
In any event you know where to look now so it should be obvious.
