Several folks on the board have swapped front sides (by mistake) and run into mushy brakes, due to the inability to bleed them completely just as you surmised. I guess you could bleed the hose, disconnect it, pressure fluid in reverse thru the bleeder screw, and then reconnect everything really fast.
