Why did you take your car to a mechanic to have the valves adjusted if you could do it yourself?

He probably didn't mess anything up by adjusting the idle speed.

I would have told him to turn the engine from the crankshaft pulley and wouldn't have taken no for an answer. You can break the plastic timing chain guides by turning engine by the camshaft.
