Years back, the local frAAnchise was offering free trAAnsmission inspections. They would remove and disassemble the trAAnsmission. If the owner declined an overhaul, they would give him his trAAnsmission back in a box. No charge.

I had a broke friend threatened with the trans in a box. We had another friend who happened to be an attorney discuss the situation with the franchise owner noting that the car was driving when brought in. Strangely enough, it was able to be driven out.
When I was recently graduated and still with a crappy job I thought there was a problem with my truck. A local indy offered to drive it and told me to do some minor repair (forgot what) but no charge for his time or information. I've referred multiple people to him over the years even though I've not had to use him.
