On the other hand, you could easily fashion a workable assembly using a general household HVAC washable filter assembly. Home Depot and the like will have a cut to fit HVAC filter that comprises of various filter mesh media, and a couple of hard plastic grids to encase the media so that it stays put and not sucked into the evap. This can all be sized and trimmed to fit the space that you have. Now understand, that the CFM rate is quite high and the media cannot filter down to paper cabin filter levels, but it will do a great job of keeping lager debris from entering, and best of all, washable, so once you've made it, should last you as long as you need it to.

I was thinking the same thing, using the washable window HVAC filters or a foam filter. It surely could be better than nothing and would be at least a filter for larger particles. Mercedes made some attempt on the Cowl cover, but it seems pointless being the fresh air intake can also come from the water drains. One could make the intake larger with some type of 3D printed cover that slips over it. I do know w126 has the luxury to have better access to the air intake than the W123 as the window wipers are not in the way.

Theseus owned a ship in Greek mythology, and when a part of the ship needed replacing, it was replaced. Eventually, everything was replaced. Is it the same ship? (I own the car of Theseus. )
