Probably got lucky on the right side as I tend to be easy with seals by starting them lightly and straight with a hammer and the rest of the way with a block of wood on square. The correct way to install the seal is to use an all thread and a couple of large washers and nuts, set it up so the bolt goes through the hub and ease the seal into place.

hammering can fracture the magnets in the tone ring which can then give you ABS and ESP errors. It is also wise to own a small credit card shaped magnet "eye" it has ferrous powder that takes shape of the magnets. It helps you see if the tone ring is correct in the seal, sometimes new parts can be faulty too. I have ran into such.

But the wooden block technique should work too if you are careful.
