Head gaskets rarely leak oil. Check the valve cover gasket. If you have an oil leak that is more than likely where the oil is leaking from. The oil leak will drip down on the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe causing the smoke. A lot cheaper to repair than a head gasket. Also, as stated before, use the engine oil dipstick to check the level of oil in the engine.
