Volkswagon was far more clear on their extended warranty I think. Plus payouts of various types to owners.
I found another 2012 Volkswagen Passat diesel with 40 thousand miles on it. The lady inherited it from her brother apparently. She thinks the warranty is over. I am not that sure as ours is not with a lot more millage.
Personally and it is only an opinion. Get them cheap enough and before too much millage is built up sell them. Use primarily on the highways. I think when the warranty is gone in a little more than one year from now. So is ours. Far too many potential expensive issues with them exist. I think the high pressure fuel pump is alloy. If they shred metal. Think well over five thousand to replace the bulk of the fuel system. I may pre empt change that high pressure pump at the first timing belt change. A few hundred dollars I think.
Anybody that feels complacent about these diesels be it Mercedes or Volkswagen. Should remember why they cheated. They were seeing too many carbon buildup issues under original warranties before they cheated.
After the fix the egr is working normally full time again. Also there are some parts that have had multiple updates to improve their reliability. That to me indicated the original ones will be failure prone. Cost of particle filters for replacement are almost a scam. The bad ones go back to China for a rebuild.
I can buy the internal cartridge or I should say could from china for 15.00. You cannot get a really new particle filter assembly. They are all rebuilds. That part would be no great deal if it was sold at a reasonable profit.
I also do not know about the later Mercedes diesels. The Volkswagen diesel is pretty cramped in the engine compartment to work on. Performance of both diesel brands is good. The potential to become serious money pits is also there.
