I have a bit of VW diesel experience...

I owned a 2011 sportwagen tdi with the 6speed manual. I removed the DPF at 120k when the factory warranty expired and drove it without issue for another 60k. It was a great car and I would still have it I'm sure but VW offered me a buyback price that was unbelievable.

The other weekend I replaced a turbo on a '12 TDI Passat with around 130k. Somehow the impeller shaft sheered in half. This was about a 10h job. Subframe is lowered a bit and the DPF is removed for this job. There's a bunch of other emissions related stuff in the way that makes it a pain.

My wife drives a '12 Touareg TDI with the V6 diesel. We've put 60k on it and its been a great vehicle. The adblue (DEF) thing is annoying.

With VCDS (star/xentry for VW) you can check the ash content of the dpf to get an idea of what the remaining lifetime is. VW specifies a specific oil in the TDIs to reduce ash buildup in the DPF.

On the emissions thing...How can mining and refining the minerals and raw materials that go into the DPF and manufacturing the product, then manufacturing the DEF fluid and plastic containers it comes in along with the whole supply chain process for importing that from China on a cargo ship which has no emissions standards all be better than simply operating without all that apparatus on the vehicle? Then when the part is at the end of its lifespan we replace it for over $1000, or better yet scrap the whole car and start over.
