I totally agree that is best to wait, watch and listen BEFORE entering a cross walk. that said, every day of the week I witness moronic self-serving drivers run stop signs and red lights at the intersection. Also, notice in the OP, the driver was going TWICE the posted speed limit when she hit the boys. Most pedestrians base their decision to cross the street on driver's going the posted speed limit. I say we are now living in a day and age when pedestrians should count on drivers speeding like bats out of h*ll......
There is an innovative cross walk light close to where I live. When you are walking and wish to cross the street at the cross walk, you press a button on the traffic light pole then wait to hear the signal. A very loud sound "whoop whoop whoop whoop' emits along with a bright white "pedestrian in cross walk" sign LIGHTS UP to warn motorist to STOP.
Even with all this, I've come close to getting run over several times by self-serving drivers who flat a** don't care about pedestrians......
