Yes, there have been many highly distinguished black military service members. Like Dr. King said: “Judge a man not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.”
Truman integrated the service in about 1948 or so, ending the all black units. Maybe Branch Rickey and him were working together.

The Army and Major League Baseball were both better for it AFAIAC. As a result I served in the Army with people of all ethnicities mixed together. The outfits I served in were better for it and as a result I have a very precious life long friend that I otherwise would have never met.
