I always change it hot. A couple of times I have gotten distracted and went close to 10,000 on synthetic. I’d prefer not to do that, but there was no obvious downside, of course that sort of damage can be small and incremental. A lot like starting your engine 1000 times with no oil pressure for the first X number of seconds. That’s an interesting device you speak of, I’m going to research that.
