I learned how to count cards (blackjack) back in the mid 70s. It’s not hard to learn. I practiced with a little handheld calculator that would deal you a hand and pit you against the dealer of course. I came out ahead consistently. The hard part is doing it in a casino with all the distractions, the dealer moving quickly and shuffling up frequently. Not to mention four decks mute the advantage you would normally gain from a high count.
I spent a little bit of time in Reno trying it out. I could last quite a while on a small amount of cash, but I never did come out ahead. Goddamn places are a magnet for losers. It was depressing. I was there in August, The only good thing about Reno was skinny dipping in the Truckee River.
