It was an oil fed runaway. An exhaust shop hit the turbo oil feed line and kinked it, starving the turbo of oil. The turbo blew 400 miles later. It started by making a siren sound as we were heading to dinner at a TDIClub event. We figured we'd just try and get back to the hotel, the turbo went POP 3/4 of the way back. Because the oil feed was damaged it's rate was reduced. If the turbo's oil feed would've been normal I'm sure bringing the car to a stop in D would not have helped.
