It's been done- Dave of ASAP in Altanta had an employee which did a few.

Cutoff the 5th cylinder. I think he used the turbo IP, but I'm not sure. Low boost, he only did low mileage engines. If you generate too much heat, the piston and cylinder won't be happy and you'll own a boat anchor.
Seems like you could get into a 300d for lots less than the conversion.
