I have used Synthetic oils (usually Mobil I) for the last 110,000 miles in my 300SD which has 225,000 miles now. I don't know what was used for the first 115,000 miles. I change oil every 10,000 miles and it still does not require adding any oil between changes. I also use a PTFE product. Nuff said?
