Look at canon camera's, they take very nice pictures, and they have a model for everybody. I have a powershot s45, it cost me $500, but it was orginally $999. I lucked out and got it right when they released the new model and this went on sale, I couldn't be happier with the quality of the camera and the pictures it takes.
My first digital kamera was a kodak DX3500. It had a flash, LCD screen, took AA batteries, but ate them up like there was no tomorrow, but it only cost me $200 3 years ago. I gave it to my mom for her basic need of one to take quick pics. Overall, it did take very decent pictures.
But for a real Film camera, I still prefer my good ol trusty Nikon 8008 35MM Camera, never takena bad picture, one helluva camera, That I got back in 1989, that still takes amazing pictures to this day. So I also think a nikon digi will be a good choice, and they have some for very good prices.
Be careful with buying online and on ebay, a lot of the camera's are grey market, wont come with an original manual. Best to buy one at a local shop. My dad bought a nikon coolpix 5700 from an online vendor, when it came, it was greymarket, so he sent it back, got his money back, and decided to buy it local, even though he was spending a few hundred more. Sometimes more savings is not worth it, especially whent he warranty is concerned.
