There is a word spelled I-A-T-R-O-G-E-N-I-C. Those of us who have learned this word (as well as another word spelled M-A-L-P-R-A-C-T-I-C-E and learned phrases like "take the pain one day at a time" or "physical therapy") as a result of visits to doctors have frequently learned to go to libraries and search medical journals just the same as a doctor or medical student might. And, hard as it might be for you to believe, some of us are good at critical thinking and research and have even had some scientific training (though it might have been more Newtonian and quantifiable than that that a medical doctor claims to have 'learned'). Call us "informed consumers".
Let's see....a superficial example of a potential path of thought:
"I'm having a son! Wow!"
"Doc says to circumcise. Ow!"
"Well, I was, so it must be right/OK/good."
"But, why was I born with one?"
"Who knows, I guess I don't need it and it's one of those vestigal evolution things, like the appendix or spleen."
"But, do we remove those?"
"Only if they get inflamed."
"So, the foreskin gets removed before it gets inflamed?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
....Then, depending on what year it is in the country of Our Master of Play Around with Stuff Just because we can and Make Money Off of It, the answer will be:
1) Because it keeps nasty young boys from masturbating [Uh, NOT true.],
2) Because boys can't be trusted to keep it clean and it might get a disease [notice use of word "might"...and they don't usually wash behind their ears, either],
3) Because it reduces venereal disease [Oh, really? I thought that was condoms.],
4) Because it reduces risks of cervical cancer in a heterosexual man's sex partner(s) [Now disproven, some researchers finally compared cervical cancer rates in countries outside the US to those from the US. No statistically significant difference that could be linked to circumcision.]
5) Because he might have to get it done later. [again, note use of word "might" and then, my next question would be "Why might he have to get it done later? You mean IF he gets an infection? Exactly how common are these foreskin-threatening infections, anyhow?]

You know, if I am confronted with so many vague and totally unrelated possible "reasons" for doing something, my usual response is to think that the person giving me the reasons actually hasn't thought it through or just totally has their head up their butt.
PS: Most women I know who have (ahem) experienced both cut and uncut prefer the uncut. Peekaboo games, less friction for her, greater sensivity in the guy, etc., etc. The one woman I know who preferred cut was squeemish in so many ways that I am not surprised she was squeemish in that one, too. Victim of advertising.
