I'm not sure about the 2.6, but the 2.3 has a single-wire temperature sensor that cuts out the A/C at what it percieves as too high a temperature. You could bypass this to keep your A/C functional. I had this sensor go bad on my old 2.3 and as a result the A/C would never engage.
