Want,

I replaced my speedo cable , a '80 300SD, a long time ago so memory is fuzzy. I remember I got a kink in the replacement cable and it didn't last long. So make sure you don't get any sharp bends in the new cable. The cable I am talking about is the entire cable, not just the core.

The instrument cluster just slides out, nothing is holding it in but friction. You may have to unscrew the oil pressure line to get the cluster out far enough. Use 2 wrenches so you don't break it off. Don't start car until you replace the oil line.

The speedo cable has a ring that screws onto the speedo head. You may need a pliers to loosen it. Pull the old cable out from the bottom and feed the new one in from the bottom up. Attach it to the speedo head, reconnect the oil line and push the cluster back into the dash.

You might call Phil and ask about any differences in the cables for cruise and non cruise control cars. I thought all the 300SDs had cruise control as standard equipment. I would think they would have the cruise control version cable available.
