Sounds like you have extraneous processes eating up memory and processor time. I would slap some more memory in there (at least a 128MB stick, more if $$$ allows). My mom has a Compaq runing ME, and I hate it. It craps out and is terribly slow in everything it does. I refuse to use compaq because of all their extraneous BS.
Sorry if that turned into a rant about Compaq. It just rubs me the wrong way.
