I do the following:
1) All steps are done before washing the entire car
2) Wet down the windshield with water
3) Sprinkle a thin layer of Bon Ami on the entire windshield
4) Use a wet washcloth to "polish" the entire windshield in circular motions. Old T-shirt material works great. Don't use a brush because it will reduce the effectiveness of the Bon Ami. The slightly abrasive nature of the Bon Ami should remove all water spots and film.
5) Rinse the windshield thoroughly making sure to get all of the Bon Ami COMPLETELY OFF the car. If there's any left it can cause swirl marks in your paint when you wash the paint.
6) Wash the car as usual.

Note- the above procedure will do very little if anything to remove pits in the glass. There's not much you can do about the fine pitting all windshields get over time from sand, small gravel and other road debris. A new windshield is the only cure for pitting.
