The C220 has a dipstick. You can mess with it if you want.
I'd only use the synthetic fluid if it specifically states it's compatable with transmissions requiring Dexron III/Mercon fluid.

The car has an upshift delay system which helps warm up the catalytic converters faster, so the harsh shifting especially cold may be normal.
