That is normal. The T is just like a little tool to turn the valve.

I presumed you serviced the trans etc. You may also want to look at the vacuum lines and especially the rubber connector to the modulator. The other item is the modulator itself. They do go bad. Did any ATF leak out when you took the cap off?

You can also adjust the bowden cable to time when the shifts happen, ie early or later. It's adjuster is found up by the throttle valve under/near the air cleaner.
