Hi 81wagon.
You can do this.
I'm thinking of having a 5.1 surroundsound set-up
in mine(sound only no tv's)
But I need to find a place to mount a center channel
speaker.
I'm thinking of mounting the speaker where the
ashtray is but there isn't enough room for the
size speaker I want(4X6"),so I need to make
room, and moving the headunit up is the only
solution.
You can move the enviro.controls up or down.
I haven't done it yet but I did study the dash for
a while and if I remember correctly you'll need to
cut the woodtrim and the plastic behind it.
Just make sure the alignment pins(on the wood)
and holes lineup(in the plastic) and that you cut only
just enough so you can still use the original mounting
holes to secure the whole thing.
You should end up with the same diameter hole
that you had in the original headunit mounting place,
This way you can use the mounting sleeve just as if
you would normaly.
If done correctly nobody(exept MB owners) will be able
to distinguish the original from the custom.
And if you don't mind some more elaborate surgery
then you could make a mounting sleeve from fiberglass,
angle it up and towards the driver for a clear
and direct view.
I hope this helps.
Louis.

You don't have to give up the original look for a custom job, if the job is done right!!!
